Shish Kebabs (Mshikaki)

IMG_20170815_155454Skewered meat or shish kebabs are pieces of meat roasted and served as snacks in skewers or just sticks. They are locally called Mshikaki. I however have friends who call it Mishkaki and as if that isn’t bad enough, some decide it is Mshakiki.Well I feel like I’ve had enough of those arguments for this lifetime.Whatever you decide to call it, it’s still my favorite street snack. Oh and it’s also been proven that it tastes better in the evening. No wonder the Mshikaki joints in my hood are always crowded in the evening you’d easily mistake them for a political gathering.
Until recently I only relied on one of the best mshikaki joints near my home. I only ever considered it a snack until I realized I can include it in my meals in a healthy way. So on one of my regular visits to the Mshikaki joint, I stood there long enough and learnt What there was to learn. The first time I made Mshikaki, it was nothing close to what they made at the streets. It was far from appealing,except it was edible. I decided which ingredients I’d toss and which ones I’d include and since I made my own version of Mshikaki, which was appealing this time, I never looked back. It was mouth watering.

While I  wanted to share my New found Love with everybody else, it’s not easy mailing everyone a piece of my Mshikaki. Seriously we all know it’s impossible.  I decided therefore it’d be easier if I shared my recipe.  There you go! Shish kebabs aka Mshikaki.
Ingredients
• Tender steak cut in 1” cubes
• 1 Crushed medium-sized onion
• 1 crushed green Chilli
• ¼ teaspoon black pepper
• ¼ cup sour milk
• 1 teaspoon tomato puree (tomato paste)
• 5 crushed cloves of garlic
• Juice of one Lemon
• 1 tablespoon salt
• 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Marinate the meat
Combine all the ingredients except oil and mix well.
Leave to stand for about 2 hours.

Preparation
Stick the meat cubes on meat skewers or just sticks.
Using a clean kitchen brush apply some oil on the meat cubes.
Barbeque the meat 3” above charcoal fire.
Keep turning till the meat is properly cooked on all the sides.

Serve it hot as a snack.
You can also  decide to serve hot with rice or ugali with some vegetables or tomato salad.
